Transformers is a media franchise, based on a line of transforming “mecha” toys by Japanese toy company Takara Tomy and American toy company Hasbro. The franchise began in 1984 and centers on extraterrestrial factions of sentient self-configuring modular robotic lifeforms (often the Autobots and the Decepticons) in an endless war. The Transformers franchise has expanded well beyond toys, and over the years has included comic books, animation, video games, television shows, and films.
